Understanding deregulation in New Jersey

If you live in New Jersey, you’re part of a deregulated energy market. This means that you have the choice between purchasing electricity from a default company or from a supplier of your choice.

With Choose Energy, you can browse the current electricity rates in your area from suppliers that serve your home. You can easily compare plans and providers and even switch to another supplier in just a few steps.

If you don’t have great credit or can’t afford a deposit on your electricity plans, you can learn about no-deposit electricity plans to see if you qualify. You might also be interested in learning how to reduce your monthly electricity bill.

What is Rockland Electric’s price to compare?

If you don’t choose your own supplier, you will receive “Basic Generation Service” (BGS) from a utility in your area, and you will be charged a default rate. This rate is called the price to compare, and you can use it to evaluate rates from different providers. The Rockland Electric price to compare varies by county and depends on your usage, but it ranged in late October 2020 from 7.24 to 12.75 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for residential customers.

Enter your ZIP code above to browse rates near you and see if you can beat the Rockland Electric price to compare.

Difference between utilities and suppliers

As a utility company, Rockland Electric is responsible for delivering power to its customers, as well as responding to power outages and fixing downed power lines in its service area. If you live in the Rockland Electric service area, you should give them a call if you notice a damaged power line or are experiencing a power outage.

On the other hand, electricity suppliers sell power to customers. In deregulated areas, you’re able to shop around and find the supplier that best fits your needs. Comparing providers and plans available to you can help you find the best rates in your area.

Which suppliers are available in Rockland Electric’s service area?

There are several electricity suppliers in the Rockland Electric service area, including Verde Energy and Direct Energy. To find out which electric providers offer service in your area, submit your ZIP code.
