Understanding deregulation in Illinois
A deregulated market, as opposed to a regulated market, gives residential and commercial customers the option to go through a retail electric provider (REP) for their electricity needs rather than having to purchase their energy directly from the utility. The goal for deregulated energy markets is to encourage healthy market competition and affordable energy prices.

What is North Shore Gas's Price to Compare?
If you don’t sign up with an independent energy supplier, North Shore Gas will continue to provide you “default” variable rate plan, which is your “Price to Compare”. The rates for this plan change quarterly based on changes in the energy market. You can use it to make an apples-to-apples comparison between your utility‘s plan and those offered by independent energy suppliers. If another supplier’s price per therm is lower than the “Price to Compare,” you can save the difference by switching to that supplier.
Customers on the default plan will likely pay a higher and less predictable energy rate than those who sign up for a plan with an independent energy supplier. North Shore Gas customers can shop for natural gas plans by entering their ZIP code above.
What is the difference between a utility and a supplier?
In a deregulated energy market, there are utilities and suppliers. The utility is the company that generates the electricity, transports it to your home or business, and responds to power outages. The utility company is responsible for restoring power in the event of an outage and maintaining infrastructure.
The supplier, on the other hand, is the entity you purchase your energy from. While deregulation provides the power to choose your supplier, it does not allow you to choose your utility company. That is determined by where you live.
