How to understand deregulation in Ohio

Up until the mid 1990s, Ohioans only had one option for their natural gas and one option for their electricity. Then, the state deregulated the energy industry. In 1996, the state of Ohio passed the Natural Gas Alternative Regulation Law and, in 1999, followed that up by passing the Ohio Electric Restructuring Act. These laws give Ohioans the power to choose the companies they want supplying their natural gas and electricity. This has led to a more competitive marketplace for gas and electric rates. You’ll want to compare Dominion East Ohio gas rates to rates from retail suppliers.

There are many factors to consider when deciding which companies to purchase your energy from. Choose Energy has made that process easier by providing free online resources. So before making the decision on your supplier, among the things you can learn are:

What is Dominion East’s price to compare?

To make it easier for customers to comparison shop, energy providers list their “price to compare” on their energy bill. This is the rate another company would have to beat in order to save you money on your energy bill. However, it only shows the cost to produce the energy. It does not factor in the additional fees you’ll find on your bill.

What is the Dominion price to compare? As of October 12, 2020, this standard service offer price is $2.251 per Mcf (per 1,000 cubic feet). Enter your zip code above to search for better rates on our marketplace.

What is the difference between a utility and a supplier?

The utility company is responsible for delivering the natural gas to your home. These companies are responsible for maintaining the delivery infrastructure. If there is an outage or gas leak, this is the company you call.

Your energy supplier provides the natural gas to your utility company to deliver to your home. If you do not select a supplier, you’ll purchase your natural gas from your utility and be subject to Dominion gas supplier rates.

Which suppliers are available in Dominion East’s service area?

Constellation is the primary competitive supplier of natural gas in Dominion East’s service area.
