Over 4 million Texas homes and businesses were in the dark on Tuesday morning, after winter storms swept across the state.
The winter system has caused below-freezing temperatures throughout the Lone Star State since Monday morning. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) entered its highest emergency level that same day, as electricity demand exceeded supply.
Energy providers have begun restricting enrollments as the storm fallout continues, limiting Texans’ ability to switch electric companies as they search for relief from high bills. Here’s what we know so far, alphabetically by provider.

NRG Energy, Inc. announced it would commit $10 million to provide relief for Texans impacted by the storm. NRG brands include Reliant Energy, Cirro Energy, Green Mountain Energy, and Discount Power.
Just Energy Group Inc. announced it would protect its customers from rate increases following the winter weather. “If you have a residential fixed-rate plan, you can rest assured that your energy rate is locked in for the duration of your contracted term. Variable-rate (month-to-month) residential customers will also not see a rate increase on their February bill. However, your total energy cost for the month of February may be impacted by higher usage due to the Weather Event,” Just Energy said.
