Long Beach utilities & energy providers
Before deregulation, the same company handled all aspects of providing energy including the transmission, delivery, sales and payment processes. Today, Long Beach Gas & Electric Co. is the primary utility service area in the city that transmits and delivers energy. However, Long Beach residents and business owners can now choose their own provider from a slew of competitors. The more choices consumers have, the more opportunity they have to find the best prices and service for their energy needs. As a result, Choose Energy has partnered with the area’s best providers such as Commerce Energy and XOOM Energy.
Long Beach energy deregulation
Deregulation of the utilities market means that monopolies are no longer granted to operate. Prior to deregulation, the natural gas market in Long Beach and throughout California was controlled by a single entity that could charge any price it wanted for its services. With little choice, customers were forced to pay the prices to receive natural gas.
Although California has yet to deregulate the electric energy market, it has deregulated natural gas. As a result of deregulation legislation, consumers can now shop for their own energy needs from many different Long Beach energy suppliers. While a few large companies will continue to transmit and distribute natural gas, competitors are now able to enter the marketplace with each offering different prices and levels of service.
Long Beach renewable energy
California is one of the leaders in the renewable energy field, ranking second among all states for electricity generated by renewable energy. Given that the population in Long Beach is expected to grow, it is important that the city find ways to reduce costs by focusing on environmentally friendly sources of energy. As a result, the City of Long Beach encourages residents to turn off lights, to not use the air conditioner unless absolutely needed, and invest in hybrid vehicles to reduce energy costs and help preserve the environment. Long Beach Gas & Electric has an agreement with Spark Energy to be the preferred supplier of green energy in the city.
