Erie electricity rates

Located along Lake Erie in northwest Pennsylvania, Erie is the fifth-most populated city in the Keystone State. Like the rest of the region, Erie experiences very cold winters, which means its residents need reliable electricity.

If you’re shopping for a new energy plan in Erie, you’ll find that pricing varies from provider to provider. Choose Energy makes it easy to compare rates and plans from many different electric companies. With our free energy comparison marketplace, you’ll discover a range of plan types, including fixed-rate, variable-rate, no-deposit, and prepaid plans.

Erie energy deregulation

In 1996, Pennsylvania passed the Electricity Generation Customer Choice and Competition Act, giving electric customers the option to choose their own energy provider. Before this, Erie electric customers could only buy power from their local utility. Customers couldn’t switch providers if they were unhappy with their service or rate.

Now, Pennsylvania electric suppliers must compete to earn residential and commercial energy customers. Deregulation often leads to more competitive rates, lower electric bills, and better service.

Erie utility companies and energy providers

Regardless of which Erie electric provider you have, your power will be delivered by Penelec, the local utility company. You should contact Penelec in the case of a power outage or downed power line in your area. You can’t choose your utility because it’s based on location.

However, you can choose your own Erie electric company, thanks to Pennsylvania electric choice. On our marketplace, you can find plans from many popular energy providers serving the city, including CleanChoice Energy, Clearview Energy, Constellation Energy, Direct Energy, Energy Harbor, Public Power, and Smart Energy.

If you don’t pick an energy provider, your rate will default to the price from the local utility, Penelec. This rate is also known as the price to compare (PTC). As of August 2024, Penelec’s residential PTC is 9.751 cents per kWh.

Erie renewable energy

Pennsylvania has an ambitious Alternative Energy Portfolio Standard (AEPS) requiring the state’s energy generators to produce a certain percentage of power from green energy, such as wind and solar power. As a result, Pennsylvanians are able to easily purchase renewable energy plans for their home or business.

If you’d like to know how much of your plan’s electricity comes from renewable sources, be sure to fully read the plan details.
